Founding Engineer

Background

Atlas is a vertically-integrated and tech-enabled medical biller. We believe three things:

  1. The trend away from independent practice is deeply harmful to our nation’s future
  2. The main problem is the complex, archaic system stacking the financial deck against small clinics
  3. Modern software advances give independent practices tools to fight back and win

‘Billing’ is the general healthcare term for everything touching payments. Fixing it means helping doctors make more for each hour they work, giving them the funding to pay employees, grow, and build thriving, independent businesses.

Role

Our billing team runs on software we build ourselves. The Founding Engineer owns the back-end systems behind it: pulling schedules and charges out of EMRs, submitting claims through clearinghouses, reading payments and denials back in, and reconciling every dollar against what the practice is owed. Every hour of manual work you automate is an hour our billers spend recovering revenue instead.

The day-to-day job is sitting close to operations, finding the slowest or most error-prone parts of the billing workflow, and replacing them with reliable systems. You will design data models, write integrations against messy third-party systems (APIs where they exist, browser automation where they don’t), and put LLMs to work on real billing tasks. You will ship to production weekly and see the effect on client collections directly.

You will work daily with our CEO/CTO and our operations team. You will have a large say in our architecture, our tooling, and who we hire next onto the engineering team.

Qualifications

We are not prescriptive on experience. The people we look for have 3+ years writing production back-end code, have owned systems end to end, and are comfortable working without a spec. Healthcare experience is helpful and not required – you will learn the billing domain quickly by working alongside the people doing it.

The common traits for people who succeed at Atlas:

  • Unimpeachable personal character (honesty, integrity, compassion)
  • High standards of performance. You care whether the code works for the person using it, not only whether it passes the tests.
  • Optimistic about change. AI tools change how we build software every few months. Our best employees are attached to outcomes, not processes.
  • You like the muck. Every employee, founders down, does their share of messy work – including reading EOBs and calling payers when that is what the problem needs.

What We Offer You

In return for your trust and commitment, we make commitments back to you:

  • Trust and responsibility – expect clear, big goals. We will trust you to tell us how we can accomplish them.
  • High rate of learning – you will learn (and take on as much work) as you can handle.
  • Transparency and honesty – we will answer every question you have about our business, and you will have access to every resource we have to do your job.
  • No hierarchy – nobody gets special privileges. Everyone does what it takes to solve the problems.
  • Share of the pie – when the company wins, all our employees benefit.

Process

Our interview process is intensive and quick. You will do an initial screen (15 minutes) with our CEO, a technical interview (45-60 minutes) walking through systems you have built, and then a 24-48 hour take-home project that mimics on the job work. To respect your time, all of this will take place in a maximum of 7 days.

References will be conducted alongside the interview process.
